First Details on Fallout: New Vegas

I really wasn’t expecting details for New Vegas to be this substantial. Most of us would have been fine with vague teases and baseless rumors, but the good folks over at Obsidian seem to have let a few things out that are worth noting. These range from plot points to revisions and additions made to the systems of Fallout 3 along with enemy types and new weapons. There’s a good deal of information to comb through and digest so take your time. Here’s a smidgen of the goods:
- There is an optional hardcore mode, the character needs to drink water, ammo has weight, healing isn’t instant etc. Normal mode is more similar to Fallout 3 gameplay.
- The storyline is focused on the New California Republic vs. Caesar’s Legion vs. New Vegas residents.
- You are not a vault dweller but are given a Pip-Boy by someone who is one.
- There is a screenshot of a vault suit as well.
- There is an assault rifle looking like the M4, as well as a new big gun with a backpack, held like a minigun.
- There are special moves for melee weapons in VATS – specifically a move for a golf club called “Fore” which seems to be a groin shot.
- The Hoover Dam is in the game and is supplying electricity to the city.
- There is a quest to rescue a ghoul from some super mutants. The ghoul can then become your companion
- The Geckos are back.
- There are both dumb and intelligent super mutants, including the elite Nightkin.
On top of all that there are a few nuggets of story stating that in place of a Vault dweller we’ll be taking the role of a courier who has been wounded in a still unknown event and is hastily buried alive. A kind-hearted robot by the name of Victor comes to your rescue and brings you the aid of a Doctor Mitchell. At this point you’re given a test, which seems to be much like the G.O.A.T. in Fallout 3, called the “Vigour Test.” After some more unknown events you’re given a Pip-boy from the doc, seeing as he himself was a Vault dweller.
At this point the exact quality of the game is up in the air, but it looks like Obsidian is heading in the right direction with this one. The rest of the info can be found via Duck and Cover.
