Lego RTS Coming To DS, Sneaks Into NYC

New York City played host to Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment as it promoted a list of games like Scribblenauts and Mini Ninjas among others plus a new Lego game. This entity which has taken Supreme Commander to Xbox 360 has come up with another rad act with its DS Lego strategy game. It hasn’t even passed through my wildest imaginations that a Lego gaming fornula could still be presented in an entirely new formula. It really made me take a second look as it was totally unexpected.  The five minute demo can really pique one’s gaming taste buds.

Lego Battles is a Real-Time-Strategy game with the DS stylus as the controller. Level 1 is the Castle-series Lego men, Level 2 the Pirates and Level 3 Space. Games of the RTS genre has found minimum exposure on Nintendo’s handheld gaming when in fact it should have been exploding on the DS. The build and battle game play involves drawing boxes around the Lego units and clicking on the space you want them to move to or attack. Players build suitable Lego-themed structures via the pull-down menu. These are after all traditional RTS moves. Noticeably absent was the drag and drop strategy which after all has never been a regular part of any of the recent Lego games.

Hellbent Games, a British development studio based in Columbia has done work on the port of the RTS Supreme commander to the Xbox 360 showing that it is familiar with the genre. It is produced by TT Games, which has also taken up many of the recent Logo franchise games. The press release boasts that it provides its gamers with as many as 90 levels to engage in where they can mix and match units to create from the different teams their ultimate Lego squad to which they can even add ninjas.  The gamers can also challenge their friends on the battlefield with the multiplayer mode provided by the wireless DS multi-card play. Watch out for the Lego Battleships coming next month.

There’s even more to drool about – somebody has disclosed that these guys are coming out with a lego light-gun shooter for PSP and a Lego fighting game for the PS3. Are you for real? This is simply mind-blowing as if a Lego RTS on the RTS-deficient DS is not enough. I’ll take the latter for now, it’s grand enough to satiate my appetite.
