Duke Nukem Forever is Nevermore

I have always been a Duke Nukem Fan. It was, in my opinion, the best game that was ever made. It was simply put, pure fun. So when they announced more than a decade ago (twelve years ago in 1997 to be exact) that they were making a game called Duke Nukem Forever, well, I almost wet my pants. But twelve years past with several promotional leaked information after that 3D Games, the company that is developing the game, is shutting down.

This mother’s day 2009, sad news depressed many expectant gamers all over the world. In the 3D games website, they posted a final farewell to all the fans.

Duke Nukem Forever has always been plagued by delays. Just imagine how far back the game was announced back in 1997. Then it was again announced in 2001, 2003, and 2007. Leaked pictures, story lines, and screen shots all fueled fans anticipation. In retrospect, the great delay is one of the biggest reasons why the game was held in such high regard in the first place. So many modifications were involved. Every time a new and improved game engine came into being, Duke Nukem was said to be switching into that new engine. They finally settled on using the Doom 3 engine when everything seemed too expensive and the man hours spent in development and re-development was getting squandered. It is perhaps, the best game that never was. What were they expecting? Switching engines meant a redesign and rebuilding of whatever software they already had at those phases.

The farewell post in the 3D Games website was particularly touching. It simply read something like this: Thank you for being a supporter and a fan. Most fans agree that it was such a terse and bitter-sweet ending to an epic game that never came out. It was in fact met with many dissenting comments that the company decided to add more by posting photos of the staff and the names of everyone who worked with the project in order to make the farewell a bit more substantial.

Gamers will surely miss dreams of interactive game play in the world of a gun toting Duke Nukem. The bloody shoot-em-up will forever be a part of fans dreams, made all the more real for its tragic inexistence. Vaporware or not, no amount of leakage will again rouse fans who all wish to bring back the project into being.
