Is Super Mario No Longer the Most Awesome Game?

Super Mario Brothers has always been the most iconic video game of all time. There is probably no denying that the games titular character is burned into the minds of several generations. It has been the number one best selling game for almost twenty four years and counting. But the last part of that sentence may now prove to be untrue as a new game is reportedly selling more than the iconic Mario.

Is this possible? Is the end coming? One could not believe such a thing outright. I myself have gotten into video games with Mario pulling me in first. In grade school, I remember times when my friends and I would gather in my house as we took turns trying to finish the seemingly infinite number of stages of Super Mario Brothers 3. This tradition goes in deep into our generation, so much so that alternate versions of the game have been spawned. These versions and spin offs such as Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Super Wario, and even Yoshi games are so many. If these were counted as Super Mario Games then surely that would cement the beloved franchise into the history books.

But the Wii phenomenon is really a tidal wave in the gaming industry. I suppose twenty four years is long enough for any world record. That is, if you consider how world records rise and fall monthly or even yearly, then Mario is already an unsurpassable achievement.

It seems that in the recent fiscal year, around 46 million Wii Sports game copies where sold in total. That makes it officially less than a million more than Super Mario Brothers. These are compared of course to their respective consoles.

Before all the fans see this as a sign of the impending gaming doomsday, you have to realize something first. Nintendo itself does not directly say whether it is absolutely true that Wii Sports is now its number one seller. They neither verify nor refute the claims that Mario is now playing second fiddle. Some might arguably read this move by Nintendo in many ways. After all, the sales records for Super Mario were not kept in strict ledgers. And also, the VC downloads of the games should also be taken into account. It may not lose its crown so there is hope for it yet to be remembered by us as still the most awesome game that ever side scrolled in the 8 – bit graphics of our collective childhoods.

On a side note, I am thinking about trying to qualify for the wsop this year and Sky Poker has a sweet promotion for up to £500 FREE + a £1000 Freeroll. Might have to check that out.
